HRT - Breast Cancer

HRT Breast Cancer Attorneys

All women’s bodies produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone. As women get older, their bodies no longer produce the same level of these hormones. As a result, many women experience hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was designed to replace the loss of hormones, especially estrogen. But the hormones in these drugs are not the same hormones a woman’s body makes. The “progestin” component, or MPA, is a man-made imitation of progesterone. It is much more potent than human progesterone, and the body doesn’t recognize it the same way.

  • Counterfeit progestin is harmful to women’s breast tissue.
  • Your doctor may not be aware of safer alternatives.
  • Many key studies show Prempro causes breast cancer.

Until 2002, many women took a combination of estrogen and imitation progestin in pill form (the most popular one was Prempro) as hormone therapy to treat hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. Even though many key studies showed that Prempro and other imitation forms of hormone replacement therapy cause breast cancer, these drugs are still on the market, and doctors continue to prescribe them. These doctors may not be aware that safer, human-identical hormone therapy is available to women. If you started or continued taking Prempro or other imitation hormone therapy after 2002 and have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, you should find out if they were a contributing factor to your cancer.

There are different types of breast tumors, and some of them are fed by imitation forms of HRT. If you were diagnosed with estrogen-positive breast cancer, and if you took imitation hormone therapy drugs, you may have a claim against the HRT manufacturer. The two types of breast cancer most commonly associated with HRT are invasive lobular cancer and estrogen receptor positive invasive ductal cancer. With a number of HRT products and drugs on the market, including Premarin and Provera, you want to find out more information if you have developed any type of breast cancer after taking hormone replacement therapy.

The Women's Health Initiative Trial was halted in 2002 because, among other reasons, the HRT medication Prempro was causing an unacceptable increase in breast cancer. Since that time, there have been several major studies on the relationship between imitation HRT and breast cancer, and thousands of women affected. All studies have shown a strong relationship between imitation HRT and certain types of breast cancer:

  • Tjonneland: Women on hormone therapy developed more than twice as many ductal breast cancers and almost four times as many lobular breast cancers as women not taking those drugs.
  • Holmberg: This trial in Sweden to see if breast cancer survivors could safely use hormone therapy was halted halfway through it because the women on hormones were getting almost three times as much breast cancer recurrence as the placebo group not on the hormones.
  • Million Women Study Collaborators: The largest study of women with breast cancer and hormone therapy, the investigators are following over 1,300,000 post-menopausal women in the UK for years to come. In their first report on breast cancer, they found after only a two and a half year average follow-up that twice as many women on combination therapy were diagnosed with breast cancer.

Women should know that there are much safer and equally effective hormone therapy drugs available, including estrogen + Prometrium, which is the same progesterone the body makes naturally.
