All women’s bodies produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone. As women get older, their bodies no longer produce the same level of these hormones. As a result, many women experience hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. Hormone replacement therapy was designed to replace the loss of hormones, especially estrogen. But the hormones in these drugs are not the same hormones a woman’s body makes. The “progestin” component, or MPA, is a man-made imitation of progesterone. It is much more potent than human progesterone, and the body doesn’t recognize it the same way. This counterfeit progestin is harmful to women’s breast tissue.
Until 2002, many women took a combination of estrogen and imitation progestin in pill form (the most popular one was Prempro) as hormone therapy to treat hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. Even though many key studies showed that Prempro and other imitation forms of hormone replacement therapy cause breast cancer, these drugs are still on the market, and doctors continue to prescribe them. These doctors may not be aware that safer, human-identical hormone therapy is available to women. If you started or continued taking Prempro or other imitation hormone therapy after 2002 and have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, you should find out if they were a contributing factor to your cancer.
