Pain Pump Injury Causes

Pain Pump Attorneys

When you have had a pain pump inserted after surgery, you expect it to make the healing process easier and to help you make a faster, less painful recovery. However, when pain pumps are placed directly into the joint space, they can ruin your recovery and cause permanent injury.

At the Portland, Oregon law offices of Williams Love O'Leary & Powers, we protect the rights of post-arthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis (PAGCL) and shoulder joint injury victims across the U.S. who have suffered permanent harm as the result of a defective pain pump.

A portable device used by doctors to ease shoulder and joint pain before and after surgery, a pain pump delivers anesthetics into the surgical area so you will not have to take additional narcotics. While they are typically only in place for three to four days, pain pumps can cause serious and life-altering problems. When used in the joint space, the medications in the pain pump eat away the cartilage in the joint area, causing the bones in the shoulder to grind against each other, which can result in chronic pain and/or permanent loss of mobility. The most common pain pump injury is called post-arthroscopic glenohumeral chondrolysis.

If a pain pump was used after your shoulder surgery in order to inject pain medication via a catheter or tube directly into your shoulder joint, you may have suffered unexpected complications such as:

  • Severe pain
  • Loss of use of your shoulder
  • Popping, grinding and/or clicking of the shoulder joint
  • Joint stiffness
  • Narrowing of the joint space, visible on x-ray
  • Cartilage deterioration
  • Chronic shoulder pain
  • Shoulder replacement surgery

The reason why pain pumps are defective is that the companies that made them failed to get FDA approval for using the pain pumps in the shoulder joint space. The companies encouraged surgeons to use the pain pumps in the shoulder joint anyway. The companies did not tell surgeons that the FDA refused to approve pain pumps for this use. With so many pain pump products on the market, it is important for all doctors to thoroughly investigate all products and any potential problems, so their patients do not run the risk of losing shoulder mobility.
