You make sure your children are properly vaccinated to protect their health. So what do you do when vaccines may lead to serious injuries, including autism? At the Portland, Oregon law offices of Williams Love O'Leary & Powers, we represent hundreds of injured children and their families seeking compensation for the devastating injuries that may have been caused by rare, adverse reactions to some immunizations, or that might be related to unnecessary exposure to a mercury-based vaccine additive called thimerosal.
While rare, severe adverse vaccine reactions do occur, and the symptoms of the reaction are sometimes diagnosed as autism. A multi-symptom disorder characterized by deficits and delays in communication skills, difficulties in social interaction and skills, and behavioral problems, autism effects an estimated 1-in-150 children in America. There is evidence suggesting that in rare cases, immunizations may trigger brain injuries that have many of the symptoms of autism.
- Thimerosal is a mercury-containing preservative that was added to many pediatric vaccines

In addition, some cases of autism may be related to exposure to thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative that was added to many pediatric vaccines, including the several new vaccines that were added to the standard immunization schedule in the early 1990s. As a result, many children were needlessly exposed to potentially dangerous levels of mercury via the shots.
Thimerosal was gradually phased out of most pediatric shots between 1999-2002, in response to concerns about the possible neurodevelopmental dangers and other health risks posed by exposing infants and toddlers to unnecessarily high levels of mercury.
Whether their injuries are related to severe adverse reactions to a particular immunization, or to exposure to dangerous levels of mercury via thimerosal, children suffering from these potential vaccine-related disorders are required by Federal law to file a claim for compensation in the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program in Washington, DC, also known as "Vaccine Court."
While we are not currently accepting any new cases, we continue to represent families with claims in the "Omnibus Autism Proceeding" in Vaccine Court. Our firm is also active in the political arena, supporting efforts to fund and conduct scientific research into the possible health risks of thimerosal exposure in young children.
