Ortho Evra, the first skin patch approved for birth control, exposes women to higher levels of estrogen than most birth control pills, according to Ortho McNeil, its manufacturer.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved updated labeling for the Ortho Evra contraceptive patch to warn healthcare providers and patients about this issue.

News reports have described an alleged link between Ortho Evra and strokes and blood clots. Patch users die and suffer blood clots at a rate three times higher than women taking the pill, according to the Associated Press.
