In the first Vioxx lawsuit to go to trial, a Texas jury awarded more than $250 million to the wife of a 59-year-old man who died after taking the arthritis painkiller drug Vioxx.

Merck & Co. withdrew Vioxx from the market in September 2004 when a long-term study showed that it could double the risk of heart attack or stroke if taken for 18 months or longer.

According to news reports, by the time Merck pulled Vioxx from the market, more than 20 million Americans had taken the medicine.
